Meet Lisa and John Stewart - Goldie, too!

Lisa came to Napa in 1999 and like so many, never left. World renowned for its beautiful scenery, wine and weather, the Napa Valley has become home with many friends and family right here in the Bay Area. She, and her husband, John, live on a small parcel east of Napa tending their three horses, a couple of goats, lots of chickens, their cat and their wonderful English bulldogs, Millie and Brisa.

Napa Valley Woodworks is an extension of their love for gracious back yard gatherings, comfortable settings with family and friends and to share their passion for hand-crafted Adirondack furniture made right here in Napa Valley from environmentally salvaged and sustainable Western Red Cedar.

Goldie Update: We said a very sad goodbye to Goldie in the early morning hours of June 9th. Our 12-1/2 year-old, beautiful English bulldog had lived a wonderful, long life never knowing a day without giving and receiving lots of love. She spent the last six months with John on his shop floor as he lovingly fashioned chairs and tables for our customers and friends. She was a constant fixture there and found the cool, concrete floor more appealing than the soft beds we would provide for her. Goldie loved everyone who came to visit the house or shop. She filled both with her presence and easy disposition.

The History of The Adirondack Chair

The first Adirondack chair was designed by Thomas Lee while vacationing in Westport, New York, in the Adirondack Mountains in 1903.

Needing outdoor chairs for his summer home, he tested his early efforts on his family. After arriving at a final design for a Westport plank chair, he offered it to a carpenter friend in Westport in need of a winter income, Harry Bunnell.

Bunnell saw the commercial potential of such an item being offered to Westports summer residents, and apparently without asking Lees permission filed for and received U.S. patent #794,777 in 1905.

Bunnell manufactured hemlock plank Westport chairs for the next twenty years, painted in green or medium dark brown, and individually signed by him. Adirondack Chair Wikipedia
